Modi's US Visit Ends in Disappointment as Trump Sidesteps Khalistan Issue, Imposes Tariffs

February 17, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the United States concluded on a sour note, with the Indian government and media failing to secure any statement from the Trump administration condemning the Khalistan movement or Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent activist. Despite intense lobbying, the Trump administration emphasized that the safety of U.S. citizens remains its top priority, sidestepping India's push for a stronger stance.

The visit, intended to strengthen India-U.S. ties, took an awkward turn during a joint press conference when President Donald Trump rebuffed questions on Khalistan, leaving Indian media visibly embarrassed. Trump instead focused on trade, announcing new reciprocal tariffs on India and warning of further levies to address the U.S. trade deficit. He also reiterated his threat to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations, declaring the alliance "dead" if they challenge the U.S. dollar's dominance.

Analysts have labeled the visit a diplomatic failure for Modi, with India unable to secure concessions on key issues. The combination of Trump's tariff moves and refusal to engage on Khalistan has raised concerns about strained relations, leaving New Delhi to reassess its approach amid growing economic and geopolitical tensions.
