Auckland, New Zealand – A group of Sikhs gathered outside the Indian Consulate at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre on New North Road, Eden Terrace, on January 26 to protest against the Indian Constitution and advocate for a separate Khalistan state. The protesters voiced their discontent with India's classification of Sikhs as Hindus in its Constitution, asserting that the only solution to the issues faced by Punjab and the Sikh community is the creation of Khalistan.
The protest, organized by Sikhs for Justice and the local group Patshahi Daawa, began at 10 a.m. and lasted for about two hours. The timing of the demonstration was deliberately aligned with the Indian Consulate’s Republic Day celebrations. Protesters tore Indian flags during the event as a symbolic act of dissent.
One protestor described the event as the first Republic Day protest in New Zealand, highlighting the global spread of the Khalistan movement. “This shows how the movement has reached every corner of the world,” they said. The movement has reportedly gained momentum in New Zealand, with protests dating back to June 6, 2024, marking an ongoing international campaign for Khalistan.
Protesters were seen energetically chanting pro-Khalistan slogans throughout the two-hour demonstration. The next protest is scheduled for June 6, 2025, unless a new call to action is issued by Sikh organizations worldwide.
The event underscores the growing resonance of the Khalistan movement in diaspora communities, with activists determined to keep the issue in the international spotlight.
